Tips for a Healthy Cookout
Summer is here and grill outs are on the books. Here are a few tips of how to think beyond the traditional BBQ favorites. Many of us may think of sausage and hot dogs which are both high in salt and saturated fats. These are okay in moderation, but take a look here to see how you can make choices that also align with your goals:
Go Lean with Protein
Choose lean cuts of beef and pork, try skinless poultry or fish
Try a ground turkey burger which can be as lean as 99% fat-free
Grill tofu, tempeh or a vegetarian burger
Don’t forget the Veggies
Season vegetables such as colored peppers, onion, broccoli and mushrooms with your favorite herbs
Add a corn on the cob, summer squash or a sweet potato for your starch
Grill up Dessert
Cook fruit kabobs, pineapple slices or peach halves on low heat until the fruit is hot and slightly golden for a tasty and nutritious dessert
Marinate strawberries in balsamic vinegar and toss in a bit of mint
