We’re so sorry for your loss 😔
Pets are family members, they’re often there for us through life’s biggest transitions and may provide unconditional love and support with few needs in return. If you’re reading this, and recently lost a pet, our hearts go out to you and we hope these tips help in the healing journey.
Do these things first:
- Get support. The first 48 hours are often the hardest. Let family and friends know to check on you, and take time off if you can. If you can't take time off work, tell your manager or team so that they may hopefully extend some grace.
- Sample work message: “Hi XXX, we had to/are going to say goodbye to our pet soon, and I’m dreading it. If I’m slow to respond or don’t seem like myself, this is why. Thank you for understanding.”
- Take care of yourself. Emotions could be high, and it might be hard to sleep. By eating well, taking time to rest, and performing basic self-care, you can manage your emotions better.
- Eat a balanced meal (protein/carb/fat/vegetable). If you can, order food or buy ready-made meals. It's okay to treat yourself too.
- Take a shower or bath and do your usual grooming.
- Rest. Put away your phone, turn off the TV, and read something uplifting or drink calming tea. If you can't sleep, do a calming activity like drawing, coloring or journaling.
- Celebrate or remember their life. Honoring your pet can provide closure. Here are some ideas:
- Write a letter to them about what they meant to you.
- Plant a perennial plant in their honor.
- Buy a shadow box frame to store keepsakes like a collar or favorite toy.
- Do activities you used to do with them, like walks on their favorite route or watching a show.
- Volunteer in any capacity. If volunteering with animals is too hard, find another organization. Search for food pantries or check with local chambers of commerce for volunteer needs.
